The Oasis Project (The Gambia) has been working within the community of Bakau in The Gambia, West Africa for 17 years delivering various projects including eye screening, education, health centre refurbishment and a drainage canal to take water away from the village and out to the River Gambia during the rainy season, thereby reducing malaria in Bakau by 74% in the first year.
A need was identified for nursery and primary education of under-privileged children and so the project set up a school to meet this need. Starlight school has been in operation for almost ten years employing qualified teachers and working closely with the Gambian Education Ministry.
Starlight started with just 6 children and now has over 210 pupils who progress through the school before moving to secondary school, the age of which depends upon their achievement level and at what age they actually started attending school.
The Oasis Project give their children hope that is grounded on a bright future and believe that this is a model to systematically reduce poverty in this community and surrounding areas. Education and welfare is key and this amazing project will help many children to get the best possible start in life.
Expansion is now needed to offer this opportunity to a growing waiting list of children. The Oasis Project are purchasing a piece of land on which they can build a school with potential for further growth in the future.
